NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has just announced that Michael Vick will be eligible to play in the third week of the regular season. This ruling has many implications for the Eagles as they proceed with trimming the roster to 53 players by 4 p.m. Saturday, and just how much trade bait quarterback AJ Feeley will play against the New York Jets tonight.
Michael Vick will be on the field for the Eagles in week 3 of the NFL season.
The Eagles were faced with the prospect of keeping four quarterbacks (McNabb, Vick, Kolb and Feeley) until Vick was allowed to play. Had they gone with three and McNabb was injured, they faced the possibility of having just one quarterback (Kolb) who was able to play until Vick was reinstated.
Since the Eagles know Vick can play after just two games, the team can proceed to trade AJ Feeley-Mitts for a second time (maybe we can get another player as great as Reggie Brown for him this time, too). This actually helps AJ as he is virtually guaranteed to find a job this season. Had the Eagles waited, they would have eventually cut Feeley and the chances of him finding a team during the season would have been slimmer than his wife’s waistline.
This also helps the Eagles further acclimate Vick to their offense. Andy Reid was going to have to decide whether to keep Vick active or place him on the ineligible list. The only way Vick can practice during a suspension is if he is active. Since the Eagles know Vick will serve a two-week suspension, they will likely keep him on the active roster so he can practice and be ready to take the NFL to new Wilddogcat heights by the end of September. Chances are, the team can survive two weeks with just two quarterbacks.
Whether you support Vick and the Eagles or detest them, the fact is No. 7 will be on the field when the Eagles host the Kansas City Chiefs on September 27. Dailyphiladelphian.com will be in attendance that day to bring you the latest news and pictures.
