Kyle Kendick has earned a spot on the postseason roster.
Kyle Kendrick hopes to lower his 12.27 career postseason ERA. He has earned a chance to return to the playoffs, a spotlight he has not enjoyed since 2007.
A year ago, despite posting 11 wins, Kendrick was not part of the Phils postseason roster. Compiling a 5.49 ERA will get you sent back to the minors. Hey, at least he didn’t get traded to Japan (see video below).
Sure, Kendrick still got a World Series ring. So did Adam Eaton.
Kendrick, a late season call up from Triple A Lehigh Valley, has secured a spot on this year’s postseason squad with a 3-1 record and 2.66 ERA in eight appearances this year.
If Uncle Charlie and Ruben Amaro leave him off the roster, Kendrick and every Phils fan has a right to revolt. Find me a better reliever in the Phils bullpen over the last month.
Kendrick is demonstrating the confidence he lacked earlier in his career. With all of the bullpen injuries, question marks, and ineffectiveness, Kendrick is a solid long relief bullpen option. He can effectively take the spot of Chan Ho Park, who is out with a pulled hammy.
Kendrick will play an important role in determining how far the Phillies go this October. With Pedro Martinez a likely option for the rotation, a long reliever will be needed. Pedro can’t throw more than 95-100 pitches, meaning he’ll go six innings at most. And, that’s assuming he is effective and recovered from a strained neck.
Kyle may have missed last year’s incredible postseason run, but this year he’ll be right in the middle of everything.
