Miguel Cairo is among the Phils to make the postseason roster.
The Phils have announced their playoff roster, and Miguel Cairo, Kyle Kendrick and Anthony Bastardo have made the team. Eric Bruntlett was among the main players left off the team for the NLDS. Rosters can be changed prior to each playoff series.
Bruntlett, who scored the winning run in last year’s Fall Classic, and who turned an unassisted triple play earlier this season, obviously didn’t make it due to his pathetic .171 batting average.
Clay Condrey and Tyler Walker, who both seemed to pitch well down the stretch, also did not make the roster. Walker is a bit of a surprise in that he has some experience as a closer.
Bastardo brings a healthy 6.46 ERA into the playoffs, but likely made it because the team needed a lefty in the bullpen to go with Scott Eyre. JC Romero’s injury opened the door for Bastardo, who showed flashes of brilliance this year. Can he be consistent in October?
In addition to your everyday lineup, the Phils kept Paul Bako, Greg Dobbs, Cairo, Matt Stairs and Ben Francisco.
The team elected to carry 12 pitchers. Brett Myers, Brad Lidge, Chad Durbin and Ryan Madson join the bullpen, while all members of the starting rotation also will play October baseball.
The team has not announced where JA Happ and Pedro Martinez fit into the plans. Who will start and who will be in the bullpen? We’ll likely find that out after the first two games of the series. Keep in mind, Charlie did say Happ could be a reliever the first two games and still start Game 4.
