“This is the best, deepest group of receivers the Eagles have had in the Reid-McNabb era.”

How many times did we hear that during training camp and the beginning of the season?

With youth and speed at the position, the Birds might still have a good corps. However, they’re now as deep as the shallow end of a midget’s swimming pool.

Kevin Curtis, who has been hampered by a knee injury for most of the year, had arthroscopic surgery this week, according to several media outlets, including philly.com. He’s out of action for a few more weeks.

With the trade of Brandon Gibson earlier this week to address the Birds’ inability to stop the tight end, and the release of Hank Baskett so the Eagles could carry four quarterbacks in week 2 when McNabb was injured and Vick was returning to active duty, the Eagles are down to five receivers.

Due to Cutrtis’ situation, the team will dress just four receivers on Monday night.

In reality, you only have three actual receivers. Until Reggie Brown shows the team something, he is there in name only.

You might be able to get away with that this weekend against the Deadskins, but not over the long term. DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Jason Avant will need help.

Brent Celek offers some aid and will draw defenders to him. However, you want to be able to keep defenses from keying in on your tight end. The lack of receivers now cancels that out.

Could Brian Westbrook enhance the passing game? Yes. Again, however, you want him as an additional weapon.

The Eagles need to find help at receiver and quick. The problem right now is there may not be anyone sitting at home at this point in the season who can still play.
