Shane Victorino wants hazard pay for facing beanballs to the head.

Four Phillies joined more than 100 other players on Friday in filing for arbitration.

All-Star Shane Victorino, catcher Carlos Ruiz and pitchers Joe Blanton and Chad Durbin all were arbitration-eligible and exercised their options to file for arbitration.

Under MLB rules, players with less than six years of service are not eligible for free agency. After three years of service, players without contracts may file for arbitration.

Under these conditions, a player and team both submit salaries that they think the player is worth. If an agreement can’t be worked out, both sides then appear in front of a judge who rules for one side or the other. Most times, the players end up winning.

According to the Daily News’ David Murphy, the Phillies avoided arbitration with all ten players who filed a year ago, including Ryan Howard.

Last year, Blanton went 12-8 with a 4.05 ERA and 163 strikeouts at the Phillies No. 3 pitcher. Durbin was 2-2 with two saves and a 4.39 ERA in 59 games out of the bullpen.

Carlos Ruiz hit .255 with nine homers and 49 RBI.

Victorino, who appeared in his first all-star game in 2009 and earned his second straight Gold Glove,  hit .292 with 10 homers and 62 RBI.

Blanton, Durbin and Ruiz figure to all get one year deals. Look for the Phils and Victorino to agree to a multi-year deal as the Flyin’ Hawaiian is entering his prime and will be a free agent at the end of the 2010 campaign, as will Jayson Werth.

It’s hard to imagine the Phillies letting both guys leave. With Dominic Brown in the pipeline, it’d be easier to replace a corner outfielder than the man patrolling centerfield.

  1. The Phillies should do whatever they can to keep Big Joe happy. He is their most underrated gem.
