A moment Ed Stefanski must wish he could take back.

On 97.5 The Fanatic today, Sixers general manager Ed Stefanski came out of the woodwork to make a radio appearance. It’s always nice to hear from the man running our beloved Sixers franchise into the wasteland of irrelevant Philly sports teams.

Seriously, nobody even cares about the Sixers.

One of the main reasons for the decline of the franchise is the salary cap hell former GM Billy King and Stefanski have put the Sixers in.

Giving max contracts to Samuel Dalembert and others didn’t help. The upside to canning King and bringing in Stefanski was that maybe the team would stop overpaying average players.

Then, Stefanski handed Elton Brand $80 million over six years. Brand went on to miss most of last year, then play himself to the bench this year.

As the sixth man, Brand has put up solid numbers this year. He’s averaging 13.7 points and 6.5 boards in 30 minutes this season.

Stefanski thinks that’s enough to justify Brand’s signing.

“I think Elton’s played himself back into the starting lineup,” Stefanski said today.

While that’s what Stefanski may think, that’s not reality. Brand is too slow to run with the young Sixers. he held the team back last year as evidenced by the fact that the team made a playoff run after he went down with a season-ending injury.

Thaddeus Young is the future of the franchise, even though he has regressed under coach Eddie Jordan.

Our guess is Stefanski knows Brand will not thrive on this team and is angling to trade his prized free agent signing. Otherwise, we have to question his ability to run the Sixers even more than we have been for the last year and change.
