In a bizarre move, the Eagles released the one guy who really helped stabilize their linebacker corps a year ago — Will Witherspoon.
Acquired at the trade deadline last year for rookie wideout Brandon Gibson, Witherspoon paid immediate dividends with an interception on Monday Night against the Redskins.
While he was brought in to man the middle, he eventually slid over to the WILL backer in place of Akeem Jordan when AJ went down with an injury.
While Witherspoon was scheduled to make $5 million this year, his release comes as a total surprise, especially since Jordan may be the only returning starter, and Stewart Bradley is coming back from an ACL.
Maybe the Eagles have their eye on a free agent, but with the crop of linebackers on the market bar, that’s probably a longshot. Don’t be shocked to see the Birds grab a linebacker in the first two rounds of the draft.
