A week after deciding to piss away more than $4 million on a roster bonus to keep stiff Stacey Andrews on the team next year, the Eagles finally made a correct decision on one of the Andrews brothers. They’ve released former Pro Bowl guard Shawn Andrews.
The move will save the Eagles the more than $2 million base salary he was scheduled to earn this year.
Always a weird, wily character, Andrews started his career by quickly ascending to the top of NFL’s list of best offensive guards. The last three years have been hell for Andrews and the Eagles.
Two summers ago, Andrews mysteriously disappeared from Eagles training camp. later, we learned he was suffering from severe depression — a legit medical condition. He attempted to come back that year, but quickly suffered a back injury.
Last summer, the Eagles tried to build a support system for Shawn by bringing in brother Stacey and college roommate Jason Peters. Andrews was ready to play and said he was going to beast on Julius Peppers in the season opener. A day later, he was out of action for a bad back. He never returned.
We as fans had lost our patience waiting for Shawn to return. Apparently now, so has Eagles management.
If only they’d do the same with Stacey.
