The Phillies just can’t shake the injury bug. Things are so bad, you can’t help but question if this is the 2009 Mets who sent the whole team to the DL.
But then you remember that the Phils have depth and can do more than just tread water even with injuries.
The team’s sparkplug Jimmy Rollins is back on the DL after aggravating his calf muscle in the sixth inning Friday against Boston.
Rollins was in just his fifth game since coming off the DL for the same injury.
The signing of Placido Polanco this winter was crucial for this very reason. It allows Shane Victorino to bat first with Planco second, and the team doesn’t lose much when compared to last year.
Of course Rollins makes the team that much better. But that’s not the point it concern right now.
Even without their powder keg, the Phillies will win this division. They held a 4.5 game edge over the Braves entering play Thursday. The Braves shouldn’t scare anyone in red pinstripes.
The Little Big Red Machine will make it to October. The key is to make sure Rollins is there.
The Phillies and Rollins should be in no rush to get him back. Let him rest and fully heal. Keep him out until after the all-star break.
Can you imagine a rested Rollins come October? Trust us, that would be the Yankees and Devil Rays worst nightmare.
JRoll, chill with your new wife. See you in mid July.
