The Little Big Red Machine got its sparkplug back, but someone forgot to try to crank the engine on Tuesday.
Sure, the Phillies got the win, but managing just two runs on four hits against a guy with a 4.08 ERA and a 7-6 record isn’t exactly lighting the world on fire. Especially not for a team that had scored at least six runs in four of its last five games.
While we can’t exactly expect JRoll to come in and hit like an All-Star after missing three weeks with a calf injury, the fact remains he went 0-for-4 and the Phils managed just four hits. Without Ryan Howard’s two hits, and Jayson Werth’s sacrifice to score Howard in the first inning, the Phillies would have wasted another gem by ageless Jamie Moyer.
Jimmy Rollins went 0-for-4 in his return from the DL on Tuesday. The Phils scored two runs on four hits.
Coming off of an impressive eight-inning performance against the Yankees last week, Moyer went another eight frames and allowed just one run on two hits.
Pitching has not been the issue for the Phils during their June swoon. Hitting and producing runs has been.
One game does not make a series, and one series does not make a season. However, a three game home series against the Indians is supposed to be the chance to get your lineup back on track and give your batters confidence.
The Phillies lineup has wasted one opportunity. Two chances remain. Will they step up to the challenge? JRoll’s back. Where’s the spark?
