First there were five. In the end, there are none.

At the end of the first round of voting for the 2010 All-Star game, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polanco, Shane Victorino and Jayson Werth were all leading at their positions and would have started.

Today, the number of Phils in the starting lineup stands at zero, thanks to a major string of slumps and injuries.

Chase Utley were named to the NL All-Star squad along with Roy Halladay. Utley won't play due to his thumb injury.

Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Roy Halladay will wear Phillies caps at Anaheim in two weeks. Utley was voted a starter, but won’t play due to a thumb injury that has him on the DL. Howard could start at DH, while Halladay will likely be used later in the game, if at all. Do you think Manuel wants to throw his ace if he doesn’t need to?

Three All-Stars? That’s it, you ask?

Did you really expect more? Polanco lost his starting spot likely due to his injury; he couldn’t have played anyway. If he could have, Manuel would have taken him as a reserve. Rollins doesn’t have enough work to earn consideration. Victorino’s lack of average takes him out of the equation?

Werth? maybe you could make an argument, but it’d be just that. He’s not riding a wave of fire into the break as he did a year ago when named an injury replacement by Manuel. Werth’s valuable to the Phils, but not an All-Star this year.

Injuries and slumps have taken the away our chance to be the Yankees and Red Sox of the NL All-Star squad this year. What can you do?
