A year removed from a below-par season, Jamie Moyer looked poised to put himself in contention for NL comeback player of the year. He was pitching as well as he had in Phillies pinstripes early this season. He had a couple of complete games, including a 2-0 blanking of the Braves.
Then, Moyer’s aging armed failed him and he injured his elbow, which ended his season. Moyer fought hard to rehab the last couple of months with hopes of returning to the big leagues next season, in what would be his 25th year.
If Jamie Moyer has thrown his last pitch, nobody can take scenes like this one away from him or our memories.
That dream now appears over as Moyer has re-injured his elbow during winter ball in the Dominican Republic.
Honestly, you’ll never find a better pro than Moyer and we certainly hope he can bounce back. But, at 48 years of age, how much more can his elbow take?
Moyer will always be a Phillie in our hearts, even if he only pitched here a few years of his career. Who can forget Game 3 of the 2008 World Series when he pitched a game that started after 10 p.m. due to rain.
If Moyer has indeed tossed his last pitch as a Major Leaguer, he finishes with a 267-204 record with a 4.24 ERA. He twice racked up 20 wins — 20 in 2001 and 21 in 2003.
