Reports have indicated that the Phillies are offering salary arbitration to Jayson Werth, but not Chad Durbin. This is nothing more than a formality and far from any indication that Werth will be back in the fold next season.
By offering Werth arbitration, which he and agent Scott Borass will surely decline, the Phillies will be able to receive compensatory picks if and when Werth inks with the Red Sox, Angels or some other team.
Jayson Werth will likely take his mug to another city next year. The Phils offered him arbitration so they can receive compensation when he leaves the fold.
The Phillies reportedly offered Werth a Jason bay-type deal this summer, but Werth wanted to go on the open market. He is eying a Matt Holliday type of contract that will pay him around $120 million.
As good as Werth has been for the Phillies, he just doesn’t fit into their plans or payroll considering he is 31. With money committed to Ryan Howard, Doc Holiday and others, Werth won’t be in right field next year unless the Phils can unload contracts of players such as Raul Ibanez or Brad Lidge.
