OK, maybe Michael Vick’s stats don’t suggest a true jinx here, but the Eagles lost and he didn’t have a standout game like the City of Brotherly Love is used to enjoying on Sundays.
Vick, the NFL Comeback Player of the Year and MVP candidate, was the coverboy of the most recent Sports Illustarted. He promptly forgot how to scramble and not turn the ball over.
The Sports Illustrated cover jinx has another casualty. Michael Vick appeared on the cover this week, then threw his first interception of the season in the Eagles 31-26 loss to Chicago.
Yes, we are being overly harsh. Still, toward the end of the second quarter, Miss Luck was not on Vick’s side as a tipped ball ended up in the Bears’ hands, ending an interceptionless streak of 224 passes this season. The pick was the turning point in the game. If the Eagles score there, they take a 20-14 lead. Instead, the Bears took the ball and a 21-13 lead at halftime.
His first interception after appearing on the cover of SI? A coincidence?
Vick still had 44 yards on nine rushes? But, it was a quiet 44 yards. It was not Vicklike. Coincidence?
As a passer, his 29-of-44 performance equates to a 65.9 completion percentage. He also threw for 333 yards. His numbers were impressive in a loss. Still, it’s a loss and his first in a game he started and finished as an Eagle. A coincidence?
The end of the World? The end of the Eagles playoff hopes? Hardly. But, let’s just say we won’t be upset if the Eagles are left off the cover of SI forever.
