Former Eagles Pro Bowl guard Shawn Andrews’ battle with depression is well documented. On this week’s “The Season Biography” on NFL.com, Andrews addresses his last two years with the Birds.
At one point he says “I felt like even my teammates thought I was faking (my back injury).” He felt the pressure from everyone who questioned his desire to play due to his bought with depression the year before.
He further says that he received a lot of racial hate mail, including one that said “the next time I see your name, it’s in an obituary.” If that is the truth, that is inexcusable and too harsh. Be upset with the guy, but hate mail is over the top.
Rather than faking it, a rehabilitation professional the Eagles sent him to in California realized he really was hurt. Exams revealed that his injury was misdiagnosed. Way to throw the Eagles medical staff under the bus, NFL.com. Wonder how the folks at NovaCare feel about this?
