Looks like the Phillies and lefty reliever Dennys Reyes are going to agree to terms before the team’s brass boards the plane back to freezing Philly tomorrow.
At first glance, this may not look like a big signing. In fact, it’ll only make waves in baseball and get significant coverage because it’s the Phillies making a move, not because it’s Reyes.
Get the buffets ready as Dennys Reyes may be heading to Philly.
However, this is a big move in that the Phillies needed a legit lefty out of the bullpen. J.C. Romero just wasn’t the same without his GNC purchases. Beyond him, what other lefty did the team have? Who else had experience?
Reyes, however, is far from the model of consistency in his career and is a crapshoot. He posted a 3.55 ERA last season, which is respectable. His 21 walks and 25 strikeouts are cause for concern
He has had one true “stud” season in his career. In 2006, he had a 0.89 ERA for the Twins. Otherwise, he’s had just one season with an ERA under 3.00 (2.33 in 2008).
In 2003, he had a 10.66 ERA in 15 games with Pittsburgh and Arizona. He has a career ERA of 4.18.
Be excited that the Phillies are making a move, but this is far from something that will get the bullpen back to the 2008 postseason version we saw parading down Broad Street.
