The friendship that developed between Cliff Lee and Jayson Werth during Lee’s brief stint in Philly in 2009 was no secret. Werth voiced his displeasure with the trading of Lee last winter. The two exchanged texts and talked during the season. The families were close and they really enjoyed playing with each other.
With both set to become free agents, the thought of both joining the same team made sense. In fact, that’s one reason early last week that some people thought the Nationals could sneak into the Lee sweepstakes.
Jayson Werth was introduced to DC today. He is not happy with Phils Ace 1A Cliff Lee.
Now that Werth is in Washington and Lee has inked a five-year deal with the Phillies, how did Werth take the news?
“He wasn’t very happy,” Lee said of his buddy.
Lee went on to say that he couldn’t really share too much of the conversation.
As far as Werth goes, he completely avoided the question during his news conference in Washington. “What happened in Philly this week?” he asked in response to a Cliff Lee question.
If Werth is really unhappy, you have to wonder if, knowing what we now know, he would have taken less money to stay here and play with the Phour Aces.
Now, Werth just has to accept the fact that he’ll be striking out a lot when he comes to Philly the next few years.
