Imagine being a free agent, Pro Bowl caliber cornerback or linebacker. You’ve paid your dues and are now in a position to pick your destination. You can pick the scheme you want to be a part of. Would you go to a team that just hired an offensive line coach as its new defensive coordinator?

That is the position the Eagles have just put themselves in. Sure, we’re a far way from free agency since the lockout is looming. Sure, money can make people decide where to play rather quickly. But, it’s still something to consider.

Will players like Nnamdi Asomugha want to sign with Philly now that it has an offensive line genius running its defense?

If the money is equal or close enough, would you sign to play with the Jets, Ravens, Giants or Eagles at this point? Do you know what the Eagles defense will look like? Is there any body of work to show potential free agents?

If I’m a guy like Nnamdi Asomugha or another Pro Bowler, I want to know that the defense I’m going to will allow me to play to my strengths. How can the eagles possibly sell that now. It’s not like Castillo can say when he was a member of a certain team’s defensive staff they ran things this way or that.

The decision to move Castillo not only to the defensive side of the ball, but as its leader, will have rippling effects as we move forward.

The Eagles offseason is just beginning. So far, it’s been baffling and turbulent all at once.

Castillo hasn’t coached defense since he was roaming the sidelines at a high school. I’m not saying he can’t do it. However, it is fair to question his skills right now and whether or not other defensive guys will want to give him a shot.
