Phillies offense rallies past Astros, 5-4

John Mayberry, Ben Francisco, Wilson Valdez and even Danys Baez. If you heard that the Phillies Opening Day game would hinge on their performances in a pressure situation, you’d probably be wondering what in the Halladay was going on.

All of the “newbies” and the usual suspects of Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard an Carlos Ruiz helped the Phillies give the fans an Opening Day for the ages with a 5-4 come-from-behind, ninth inning win against the Houston Wades.

Trailing 4-2 entering the ninth, Baez recorded a shut out inning. Yeah, I was shocked, too.

Ben Francisco was one of the heros of Friday’s comeback win to start the 2011 season.

Then, JRoll and Howard each got on base. JRoll, after stealing third, scored on an RBI single by Francisco. Chooch then reached base and Valdez followed with another RBI single. Then, big Mr. Mayberry delivered a game-winning single over the head of Michael Bourn.

Seriously, who saw this coming, especially with the names involved. Francisco, taking over for departed all-star-turned crybaby Jayson Werth finished the day 1-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Valdez went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the place of injured stud Chase Utley.

Yeah, it’s only one day, but the guys the Phillies need to step up did so. And, on a day when your bullpen imploded with a brutal seventh inning, you have to be proud of the Phillies offense for hanging tough.

Following a typical Doc Halladay outing in which he gave up one run on just five hits, while striking out six in six innings, the Phillies found themselves in a 4-0 hole entering the bottom of the seventh. JC Romero and David Herndon combined to allow three runs in the top of the seventh.

The offense just couldn’t get to former teammate Brett Myers who tossed six scoreless innings before giving up two runs in the bottom of the seventh.

But, a scoreless eight by Ryan Madson and ninth by Baez set the table for the ninth inning rally.

Ace 1A takes the hill tomorrow night when Cliff Lee tries to keep the Phillies rolling.
