Only in special, extreme circumstances will Joe Banner and the Eagles restructure contracts when players want new deals. They did it with Brian Westbrook and the smart money says they will do it with DeSean Jackson.
The Eagles know Jackson is their new BWest. On a single play, Jackson, too, can save a season.
After going “all in” by signing Nnamdi Asomugha, Cullen Jenkins, Ronnie Brown and others, the Birds braintrust can’t go without paying DeSean what he’s worth and ensuring his happiness. The fact is DeSean is in his prime now. At his size, he likely won’t be as dynamic in another four years.
Entering the final year of his rookie deal that pays him $565,000 this season, Jackson is grossly underpaid. The two-time Pro Bowler deserves a bump in pay. problem is, he has a contract and needs to honor it. He needs to be in camp so the Eagles can negotiate in good faith. The Birds do not negotiate with guys sitting at home.
The bottom line is Jackson needs to report to camp, and he will. As of today, he’s being fined $30,000 a day. Compound that with the new CBA which takes away years counting toward free agency (Aug. 9 this year), and DJacc and his agent Drew Rosenhaus have to know it’s in their best interest to report this weekend.
Why hasn’t he yet, especially with the enthusiasm surrounding the team? Two words — Leonard Weaver. It’s not Weav’s situation directly, but look at what happened. Dude gets injured, can’t recover and gets cut. That big payday he scored last offseason — gone.
DJacc likely wants to reduce the risk of injury. One big hit and, in a league with nonguaranteed contracts, his financial future takes a hit. It’s all about the signing bonus in the NFL and that’s what DJacc wants — financial security.
In the end, the Eagles will resign Jackson and everyone will be happy. This isn’t the days of T.O. Jackson has never been a real problem in a locker room and even last year when he wanted more money, he played his heart out. He won’t be doing sit-ups in his driveway.
He just needs to report to camp to ensure his financial future.
