Looks like Hip Hop, the former Sixers mascot that people loved to punk, didn’t have a rafter-raising ceremony career after all. While no word has been heard from the aging rabbit as he phases into the next step of his life as a family man, we can’t help but think he’ll be a bit hurt by this one.
Not only will the juiced bunny be replaced by a moose, dog or whatever Jim Henson’s company has designed, but his replacement is getting his number, too. Yep, looks like the new mascot will be assigned number 76.
During one of his late night Twitter sessions, hardworking and never-sleeping Sixers CEO Adam Aron gave us a little hint. Here’s the Twitter exchange:
“@SixersCEOAdam: I’m thinking 76 makes more sense RT @AdamM_18 @ryankim97 Make the mascot a number 77”
The tweet appears to have since been deleted and I didn’t get a screen grab. (It was in the early morning hours and I wasn’t about to grab the laptop.)
Honestly, it’s no surprise that the new mascot would get the number. The fact is, as far as we can tell, only mascots have worn that number for the Sixers. There was Hip Hop and, umm, yeah, Shawn Bradley.
