And then there were six…
Following the Phillies trade of Joe Blanton to the Dodgers on Friday, the current roster features just six players who own a 2008 World Series ring. Can you name them?
Cole Hamels, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Chooch and Kyle Kendrick. KK wasn’t on postseason roster but does have a ring since he played that year.
Blanton was traded to the Dodgers for cash or the ever popular PTBNL (player to be named later). The move is strictly an effort to lower the payroll even more. Blanton was a redundant piece of the roster right now. With Hamels, Roy Halladay, Cliff lee and Vance Worely, the Phils only had room for one fifth starter. And, quite frankly, Kyle Kendrick can give you what Blanton has this year and next.
Joe Blanton was the latest Phillies player traded on Friday as he joins Shane Victorino in Los Angeles.
Blanton leaves Philly with an 8-9 record but has pitched 133 1/3 innings for the Phils, second on the team. He’s always been viewed as an innings eater dating back to when Billy Beane drafted Kentucky Joe in a Moneyball move.
While Blanton will always be remembered as a guy the team “overpaid” to keep with a three-year extension worth around $8-9 million a year, the fact is he was the No. 3 starter on your World Championship team. He performed well in the playoffs and slugged a homer in the World Series.
Now, he gets to join Shane Victorino and chase another title this year.
