With the Bears signing Julius Peppers and Chester Taylor, the Seahawks bringing in Brandon Marshall for a visit, the Giants landing Antrel Rolle, and the Ravens acquiring Anquan Boldin during the first day of free agency, many Eagles fans have to be wondering, “when is it our turn to make a major headline?”

The bottom line is you can forget that unless the Birds engineer a trade. Resigning Leonard Weaver to a three-year deal that makes him the highest paid “fullback” in league history may likely be all you get this year.

And, that’s perfectly acceptable.

Look at the free agent landscape and there just wasn’t anyone out there that makes the Eagles immensely better. There just isn’t.

The Eagles were right to pass on giving Chester Taylor, Julius Peppers and others big time money.

Sure Peppers would have added another big-time defensive end with the potential to sack the QB every play. But, Peppers is 31 and has a reputation for taking plays, or games, off. Do we really need another Jevon Kearse? Is Peppers really worth more than $90 million over six years? Even in an uncapped year, the Bears overpaid.

Aaron Kampman? Forget him. He’s coming off ACL surgery and visions of Stacey Andrews in street clothes last year come to mind with anyone coming back from that injury. Pass.

Antrel Rolle would have been a nice pick-up. However, again, the Giants overpaid for him. Could you imagine paying him seven million a year when the Eagles wouldn’t poney up that cash for All-Pro Brian Dawkins?

Chester Taylor, LT, Thomas Jones or any other running backs to compliment LeSean McCoy? Jones will command too much money for a 31-year-old back, and LT will likely get more money than an overhyped goal-line back is worth. Taylor? Well, honestly, Weaver is as good a fit as Taylor.

The bottom line is that with the uncapped rules that basically allowed teams to lock up players with less than six years of service has severely limited free agents. The Eagles aren’t wrong to pass on free agency this year.

By FRANK WARD
DailyPhiladelphian.com Editor

SI.com’s Don Banks has always been one our favorites, and today we like him that much more. He lists the top 10 free agents in the NFL and predicts where they will sign and says where the players should sign.

Among the free agents is Darren Sproles. While Banks thinks the diminutive speedster will ultimately land in Washington, he says Philly is the right fit for him and his skill set. Your DailyPhiladelphia said as much earlier this week.

Should Darren Sproles go to Washington, or join the upper level of the NFC East?

Sproles has the perfect make up to explode in the Eagles offense, and would be the ideal change-of-pace back to compliment LeSean McCoy. Sproles is too small to be a true featured back, but would run the screen pass exceptionally well, and gain big time yards when in the open field.

Banks also indicated the Eagles could be suitors foe free agent safety Antrel Rolle. While he is likely headed back to Arizona, Rolle is an up-and-coming young safety. He’s the type of guy the Eagles usually target in free agency.

If the Birds can land both of these guys for the price it would take to get Julius Peppers, we’re all for having the former North Carolina Tar Heel head elsewhere.

According to a report by ESPN.com, the Arizona Cardinals will release Pro Bowl caliber free safety Antrel Rolle instead of paying him $12 million.

A year removed from trying to patchwork filling the position after the departure of Brian Dawkins, the Birds must sure up the position. The Eagles defense is predicated upon a pass rush and strong play in the defensive backfield.

Antrel Rolle could be the answer at free safety for the Eagles.

Rolle, who moved from cornerback last year, picked off four passes and and registered 72 tackles a year ago. He and Darren Sharper are the top safeties that will be on the free agent markets. Sharper is well in his 30s, and going after him would raise too much outrage over the Eagles letting Dawkins walk when he is about the same age. Rolle is 27. In the Eagles eyes, that is the ideal age for a potential Pro Bowl free agent.

Combining Rolle with Asante Samuel, Sheldon Brown and Quintin Mikell would restore the Eagles as the best defensive backfield in the NFL.

Don’t be surprised to see him in for a visit the first day of free agency. This has an Asante Samuel-type situation written all over it. Remember, the eagles signed Samuel in the opening hours of free agency two years ago.
