Tired of the same old couch or barstool? Check out Philly’s newest sports bar with an Eagles motif. Birds tight end Brent Celek and offensive lineman Todd Herremans are giving it a go as sports bar owners.

According to The Inquirer’s Michael Klein, the two are investors in 879, located at the site of the old Crocodile Philly at 110 Chestnut Street.

Eagles TE Brent Celek and OL Todd Herremans have a new establishment in Old City that combines their uni numbers.

The name of the establishment is a combo of Celek’s 87 and Herreman’s 79.

When we get a chance, or when Celek/Herremans invite us in for an tour/interview (yes, that is shameless self-promotion), we’ll give you a better idea of what it’s like. Otherwise, you’ll have to go yourself or wait fort he next late night out the Mrs. and I have in Old City.

On the day Michael Vick pulled out of his interview with Oprah, we learn that his tight end has his own dog woes. The Villas at Packer Park Condo Association is suing Brent Celek and his wife for having a dog, which is apparently against condo regulations.

The price? $10,000 in property damage to common areas.

What dog does that much damage? Did he urinate and kill some grass? New sod isn’t that much money.

Maybe the Celek’s are violating the terms of their condo agreement. Still, the lawsuit seems a bit over the top to us.

Kevin Curtis had arthroscopic knee srgery this week and will be out for a few weeks.

“This is the best, deepest group of receivers the Eagles have had in the Reid-McNabb era.”

How many times did we hear that during training camp and the beginning of the season?

With youth and speed at the position, the Birds might still have a good corps. However, they’re now as deep as the shallow end of a midget’s swimming pool.

Kevin Curtis, who has been hampered by a knee injury for most of the year, had arthroscopic surgery this week, according to several media outlets, including philly.com. He’s out of action for a few more weeks.

With the trade of Brandon Gibson earlier this week to address the Birds’ inability to stop the tight end, and the release of Hank Baskett so the Eagles could carry four quarterbacks in week 2 when McNabb was injured and Vick was returning to active duty, the Eagles are down to five receivers.

Due to Cutrtis’ situation, the team will dress just four receivers on Monday night.

In reality, you only have three actual receivers. Until Reggie Brown shows the team something, he is there in name only.

You might be able to get away with that this weekend against the Deadskins, but not over the long term. DeSean Jackson, Jeremy Maclin and Jason Avant will need help.

Brent Celek offers some aid and will draw defenders to him. However, you want to be able to keep defenses from keying in on your tight end. The lack of receivers now cancels that out.

Could Brian Westbrook enhance the passing game? Yes. Again, however, you want him as an additional weapon.

The Eagles need to find help at receiver and quick. The problem right now is there may not be anyone sitting at home at this point in the season who can still play.

The Los Angeles Clippers and Arizona Cardinals have been bumped down the list of professional sports most dysfunctional organizations. The top spot now belongs to the Philadelphia Eagles opponent for this week — the Oakland Raiders.

In the last year, owner Al Davis fired one coach he accused of being a liar and replaced him with one who is under investigation for knocking out one of his assistant coaches. Tom Cable also faces sanctions from the NFL if he is found guilty of assaulting defensive coach Randy Hanson.

On the field, the Raiders aren’t much better and the Eagles should set the tone for a banner Philly sports day that will culminate with a Phillies win over the Dodgers on Sunday night (weather permitting).

Brian Westbrook will look to help the Eagles run past the Raiders on Sunday.

Quarterback — Edge: Eagles. Raiders QB JaBustus Russell is averaging 121 yards passing per game with an impressive 4:1 touchdown-and-interception ratio. Oh, yeah, four is the number of interceptions he’s thrown. He actually has thrown twice as many picks as Lord Favre. That’s pretty bad. By comparison, Eagles signal caller Donovan McNabb has thrown five touchdowns and one interception in two games this year.

Running Back — Edge: Eagles. Darren McFadden, the Raiders version of Reggie Bush, is out with an injury. Justin Fargas and Michael Bush are left to carry the load. Bush is an underrated, bruising back. However, with no passing game to speak of, the Raiders run game will go nowhere. Brian Westbrook and Shady McCoy should each get a touchdown this weekend.

Wide Receiver — Edge: Eagles. Javon Walker is a has been who doesn’t even appear on the team’s official depth chart. Darrius Heyward-Bey is a never will be. Heyward-Bey, Oakland’s first round pick this year, has two more receptions this year than his grandmom. The raiders top producing wideout is Louis Murphy, who has ten more receptions than Heyward-Bey. For the Eagles, rookie Jeremy Maclin had his coming out party last week, and teams with DeSean Jackson to give opposing defenders nightmares due to the wideouts’ speed. Jason Avant is an underrated slot receiver.

Tight End — Edge: Push. For the Raiders, Zach Miller is a solid, young receiver. Put him in an Eagles uniform with McNabb and Kolb throwing to him, and he’d probably be as productive as Brent Celek. The Eagles young gun is clearly have the better year. However, this is about production this week, and the Eagles linebackers have not stopped a tight end all season.

Offensive Line — Edge: Push. OK, it’s not really a push, but your Daily Philadelphian started feeling sorry for the Raiders. Give the Eagles the edge here, too. Robert Gallery is out for the Raiders. He is their most noteworthy lineman.

Defensive Line — Edge:Push. The Raiders line up two ancient, walker-dependent cagey veterans at defensive end in Richard Seymour and Greg Ellis. The two have combined for six sacks so far this season. Eagles starting defensive ends Trent Cole and Victor Abiamiri have combined for 4.5 sacks. The run stopping ability of each club is comparable.

Linebacker — Edge: Push. This is more of an indictment on the Eagles inability to cover a tight end than it is an attempt to give the Raiders any props.

Secondary — Edge: Eagles. Nnamdi Asomugha is a very good corner back, but he doesn’t get much publicity because he plays in a Black Hole for a team that has been lost for years. The usual suspects of Samuel, Brown and Mikell are clearly a step above the Raiders secondary.

Special Teams –Edge: Eagles. DeSean Jackson is always the x-factor. Plus, we’ll take David Akers over Seabass these days.

Wildcat — Edge: Raiders. They don’t run the gimmick offensive formation as much as the Eagles.

PREDICTION: Eagles 37, Raiders 16. The game is only this close because Andy Reid will call off the dogs by the start of the fourth quarter.

Sometimes, the best moves are the ones you don’t make. Or, so the cliche’ says.

The Eagles refused to surrender a first day draft pick for Tony Gonzalez. Turns out that Andy Reid once again knew what he was doing — or not doing.

Gonzalez ended up being dealt to the Atlanta Falcons for a second round pick. The Eagles kept their second round selection and now have Shady McCoy to show for it. Without McCoy, the Birds would not have had a legit backup to Brian Westbrook.

With plays like this one, Eagles tight end Brent Celek is starting to remind people of Chad Lewis.

Meanwhile, the Eagles still were able to line up one of the league’s better pass catching tight ends this season. They just didn’t have to go outside of the organization for help.

Brent Celek has emerged as the perfect TE for the Eagles offense, and he is starting to remind some of a Pro Bowler from earlier this decade — Chad Lewis.

When Lewis returned for a second stint with the Eagles for the 2000 season, McNabb’s first as the full-time starter, the Brigham Young product was the “hot” receiver in most formations. Lewis was McNabb’s go-to-guy when he got into a jam, and he hauled in 69 passes for 735 yards and three touchdowns.

In his first three games of the 2009 season, Celek has caught 22 passes for 245 yards and two scores. He’s fifth among NFL TEs in receptions, having played one less game than those ahead of him.

Gonzalez, meanwhile, has 13 catches for 160 yards and two scores in his team’s first three games.

Celek is clearly the man controlling the middle of the field right now for a team that lacks a threat in the slot due to Kevin Curtis’ injuries. He has become McNabb’s and Kevin Kolb’s security blanket, and he has space to run thanks to the attention opposing defenses must place on DeSean Jackson.

The third year tight end from Cincinnati is on pace to not only surpass Lewis’ best season. With his current level of production, he could break Keith Jackson’s franchise record for most receptions at the position. KJack pulled in 81 receptions during his rookie campaign in 1988.

For the last two seasons, Celek played in the shadows of butterfingers L.J. Smith. In fact, Andy Reid was so unsure of what he had in Celek that he handed Smith more than $4.5 million last season when he placed the franchise tag on the bust out of Rutgers.

Celek enjoyed a coming out party during the postseason last year. In three games, he caught 19 balls for 151 yards and three touchdowns. In the NFC Championship Game alone, he put up 10 receptions and found pay dirt twice.

His play helped pave the road for Smith to transform himself from the Eagles top TE into John Harbagh’s headache. Smith, now playing in Baltimore, has played in just two games and is averaging an insane 26 yards per reception. Of course, he only has one catch.

The Eagles unquestioned No. 1 TE this season is fulfilling all the promise that Smith never came close to touching. He plays the right way and in many ways is looking more and more like Chad Lewis did during his best years. He’s not afraid to leap over defenders to gain an extra yard or two, much like Lewis did.

Celek is the TE the team has lacked since Lewis retired. All Andy Reid had to do was look on his bench to find the perfect TE for his offense.

Marques Colston hauls in one of his two scores on Sunday.

For a half, you thought the Eagles would have a chance to pull out a win even without Donovan McRib.

Then, two costly turnovers by Hobbs and Kolb made Eagles fans want to sob.

Ellis Hobbs started the second half by fumbling the opening kickoff, and the Saints then marched into the end zone to take a 24-13 lead. Kevin Kolb, who had played well for a half, followed that with an interception, leading to another touchdown and a 31-13 advantage for Drew Brees and the Saints.

Those two miscues cost the Eagles the game, pure and simple. They changed the momentum and the Eagles never recovered.

Taking away the turnovers, Kolb (who threw two more late INTs) seemed to play well. He made good throws, stayed in the pocket and showed he can be a competent No. 2 quarterback. He earned the right to start again next week if McRib is out — a likelihood since the Eagles have a bye the following week.

CAUSE FOR CONCERN: The offensive line, the defense’s tackling ability and the special teams.

With three projected starters missing from the first unit today, the offensive line was in shambles. Winston Justice continued to play well in place of The Beast, Shawn Andrews. He is the lone bright spot on the line. Max Jean-Gilles looked OK in place of Stacey Andrews, however, the man with the $40 million deal better learn how to block so he can get on the field soon. The fact is, the line needs to gel and the continuity to do so.

The defense missed Weapon X Brian Dawkins today, and it showed. Dawk wrapped people up and put their a$$es on the turf. The secondary couldn’t have wrapped a Christmas gift today.

On special teams, Ellis Hobbs’ fumble was inexcusable and he did not redeem himself with the 65-yard return toward the end of the third quarter. Sav Rocca is inconsistent and his long punts do not outweigh his piss-poor short punts that are reminiscent of a 10-year-old soccer goalie’s kicks.

REASONS FOR OPTIMISM: Kolb, Jackson and Celek.

Again, Kolb looked solid, if not spectacular. His 391 passing yards were 12th-most in Eagles history according to Ray Didinger of Comcast SportsNet. Yes, the guy threw three interceptions (one was a Hail Mary to end the game), but only one really cost the team.

DeSean Jackson had 100-yards and a touchdown and is showing no signs of a sophomore slump.

Brent Celek outplayed the overhyped Jeremy Shockey by hauling in eight receptions for 104 yards. He is starting to remind Eagles fans of a young Chad Lewis. The Birds could only be so lucky.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: Drew Brees, QB, Saints. Brees tossed for 311 yards and three touchdowns. With nine touchdowns in two games, Brees could be on the verge of one of the most prolific passing years in NFL history in terms of TDs and yards.

GOAT OF THE WEEK: Ellis Hobbs, KR, Eagles. His fumble to start the second half turned the game around.

NEXT UP: The Kansas City Chiefs, a 13-10 loser to the Raiders today.
