It’s now officially midnight in the East, standard time and clock rollbacks be damned. That means hundreds of baseball players are free agents and can negotiate with anyone.

While Derek Jeter may be the biggest name on the market due to sentimental reasons, the top players available have Philadelphia ties and interests.

Jayson Werth is now a free agent, as are Cliff Lee and others.

Jayson Werth, the star right fielder who hit behind Ryan Howard in the Phillies sometimes potent lineup will now sit back and wait for Scott Boras to bring teams to their knees. Werth, who hit .296 with 27 long balls and 85 RBI last year will look for Matt Holliday money. Holliday inked a seven year, $120 million deal with the cardinals last year.

The top pitcher on the market is someone the Phillies have had and may pursue again. His name — Cliff Lee. Lee was dealt to Seattle last year to make room for Roy Halladay, Ruben Amaro tried to get him back at the trade deadline last year but was unwilling to part with Domonic Brown.

The Phillies are clearly a longshot to get in the Lee bidding unless they feel they can move some other contracts. Lee will likely end up in New York or stay in Texas.

Based upon his six-RBI performance in the deciding sixth game, Hideki Matsui was named the 2009 World Series MVP.

Many, including Matsui himself, were surprised that he won the award considering he played in only three games as the DH.

“It’s awesome, it’s just unbelievable,” Matsui told FOX after the game. “I’m surprised myself.”

How can someone who didn’t play every game win the award? He basically won it off of Pedro Martinez’s arm. Hideki may now be Pedro’s daddy considering he took Pedro deep in Game 2 and again on Wednesday.

In our view, Andy Pettitte with his two wins may have been a better choice. Heck, Derek Jeter and even Chase Utley were better options. Hideki’s performance on Wednesday was incredible, but one game does not make an MVP.

This once again demonstrates why the media itself should not determine MVP Award recipients.
