In the midst of dealing with the thugs harassing Center City patrons, Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey has issued an APB for fans of the Washington Nationals. Seems none have been seen in South Philly as the Phillies prepare for their first=place battle with the nationals this weekend.

Oh, yeah, that’s right. The Nationals are a mere 21 games out of first place, far from where Jayson Werth and his new fans thought they’d be.

Remember when Nationals fans were abundant and ripping the Phillies and their fans this winner and spring after landing Werth. Remember them saying we wouldn’t be able to take over their stadium, and apparently saying they’d be up here.

Yeah, it hasn’t happened, which begs the question: where the hell are all the nats whiners at now? Where are their big, whining voices?

Maybe we’ll find out next year or the year after when they are fighting for a Wild Card birth. Of course, at that point they become frontrunners and not fans like the ones who occupy Citizens Bank Park night after night after night.

By FRANK WARD

The editors of GQ Magazine and the publication’s sports blog might want to stick to fashion. Either that, or they may want to hire actual journalists who know how to report with facts and details.

It seems that the publication has engaged in typical lazy journalism that ends with Philly fans being bashed as the worst in sports. Yes, Santa Claus was referenced. How many times do we have to drudge up a story from two score and seven years ago?

In it’s list of the “Top 15 Worst Sports Fans in America” Phillies and Eagles fans were ranked first and second, respectively. Here’s the justification:

“Over the years, Philadelphia fans have booed Santa Claus, their own star players, and most absurdly, the recipient of America’s very first hand transplant, whose crime was dribbling in a ceremonial first pitch—thrown with his freshly transplanted hand. Boooo! Admittedly, there are some things fans have cheered. Like Michael Irvin’s career-ending neck injury and a fan being tased on the outfield grass. Things reached their nadir last season, when Citizens Bank Park played host to arguably the most heinous incident in the history of sports: A drunken fan intentionally vomited on an 11-year-old girl. The truth is this: All told, Philadelphia stadiums house the most monstrous collection of humanity outside of the federal penal system. “Some of these people would boo the crack in the Liberty Bell,” baseball legend Pete Rose once said. More likely, these savages would have thrown the battery that cracked it.”

GQ named Phillies fans the worst in sports. Maybe the publication should ask Cliff Lee for his thoughts on why he'd raise his kids among a group of heathens. Oh, yeah, that's right. Lee wanted to come back here because we're so great.

First, the piece <del datetime="2011-03-17T21:21:29+00:00">of shit</del> was thrown together so lazily that the “writers” just combined Phillies and Eagles fans together instead of separating them like they did every other team’s fans.

Second, this is nothing but a stereotype. Again. Sure, the Pukeomon and taser morons are the few bad apples that keep us on the top of all these lists. Still, this is now the exception, not the norm. And, they are compiling this list based on reputation alone.

How else do you explain the Yankees fans coming in at No. 9? Apparently, they didn’t want to do any actual current research. The Yankees faithful racked up six points in our Moronic Fan Watch during the 2010 ALCS alone. That is more than the three points that Phillies fans would have earned all of last year (Pukemon, taser boy and “Redman”).

As far as Rose’s comment goes, it was made tongue-in-cheek. And, if not, then how about doing some actual current research, GQ? All you need to do is go back to December when Cliff Lee said, “Phillies fans don’t need a telemprompter to know when to cheer.” Yes, that would be the same Cliff Lee who chose Philly over New York because his family loved it here. If we were really the heathens GQ is trying to make us out to be, would the Lees want to raise their children here? Didn’t think so.

Here’s the full list in case you still care at this point, although we’d question why when it’s apparent that zero actual brain power was used in compiling this garbage.

1: Philadelphia Phillies
2: Philadelphia Eagles
3: West Virginia University Mountaineers
4: Oakland Raiders
5: University of Maryland Basketball
6: Boston Red Sox
7: Penn State University Football
8: Duke University Basketball
9: New York Yankees
10: Louisiana State University Football
11: Montreal Canadians
12: Dallas Cowboys
13: University of Wisconsin Football
14: University of Oregon Basketball
15: Los Angeles Lakers

Interesting, the Mets fans weren’t included. I guess we know what team the jackasses who wrote this cheer for.

Tired of the same old couch or barstool? Check out Philly’s newest sports bar with an Eagles motif. Birds tight end Brent Celek and offensive lineman Todd Herremans are giving it a go as sports bar owners.

According to The Inquirer’s Michael Klein, the two are investors in 879, located at the site of the old Crocodile Philly at 110 Chestnut Street.

Eagles TE Brent Celek and OL Todd Herremans have a new establishment in Old City that combines their uni numbers.

The name of the establishment is a combo of Celek’s 87 and Herreman’s 79.

When we get a chance, or when Celek/Herremans invite us in for an tour/interview (yes, that is shameless self-promotion), we’ll give you a better idea of what it’s like. Otherwise, you’ll have to go yourself or wait fort he next late night out the Mrs. and I have in Old City.

Really? Do we need another scene like above? Really, do we?

On NFL Live Tuesday night, former <del datetime="2010-09-29T21:27:26+00:00">stiff</del> quarterback Trent Dilfer was pleading with Eagles fans to cheer McNabb. He pretty much put us on blast saying we complain about our reputation for our behavior, yet rarely do anything to correct it. He said he hoped we’d prove him wrong, but doubt we would.

I initially though Dilfer was being a dope and picking on an easy target. I thought he was being as lazy as a TJ Simers from the LA Times, who takes shots at us every time his paper flies him into our city.

I still think Dilfer is wrong. The right thing is to cheer McNabb during introductions — or at the start of the game if he is not introduced. Then, root against him the rest of the game. He’s not one of ours anymore, but you have to give the guy the respect due to a man who gave us 11 amazing seasons, including five NFC Championship Game appearances and a trip to only our second Super Bowl.

Will McNabb get the Brian Dawkins treatment? Look, he just didn’t connect with the fans the way BDawk did. To think he’ll be received like Dawk is wrong. Does that mean he deserves the T.O. treatment? Hell no. And, anyone who thinks he does needs to have their head examined.

Donovan McNabb deserves to be applauded to start the day Sunday for the memories he left us with during the last decade.

Which brings me to exhibit A: Angelo Cataldi and his Nerdy 30. Yeah, the same idiots who booed McNabb are planning a walk to the Spectrum to boo McNabb upon his return. How many of those guys actually go to the game? Probably none. Cataldi will hightail it to his home to watch the game with his cats.

He’s not a Philly fan. He’s a Yankee fan-turned-shockjock wannabe trying to maintain his ratings. Yet, he’ll get the publicity his insecurity covets. The footage will be shown on national TV, and we’ll all look like idiots in the process.

That’s not how it needs to go down. McNabb didn’t connect with Philadelphia for whatever reason, but he did his best to deliver the most incredible era of Eagles football this city has ever seen. He was involved in the community, but chose not to seek attention for it.

I’ll flat out tell you the night before Thanksgiving in 2004, McNabb visited a hospital I worked at to meet with patients, take pictures and distribute incredible gift baskets he and his wife purchased on their own. He wanted no media. In fact, that was a condition of him visiting that night. I can’t help but imagine the countless other stories like that out there that went unreported.

Booing McNabb at the start on Sunday is a stupid thought. He didn’t win the Super Bowl. And, neither did 52 other guys that fateful February day. Yet, the rest of them are revered here.

Did we boo Allen Iverson when he came back with the Nuggets, or the Pistons? Did we boo AI when he resigned here last November? Hell, we acted like we won the NBA championship when AI kissed center court before an electric Wachovia Center last fall.

Sure, AI may have been a folk hero in Philly. Still, he’s a guy who made mistakes off the court and kept saying, “I’m a young guy who’s made mistakes and will continue to make them.” He’s a guy who got traded after skipping out on Fan Appreciation Night with Chris Webber.

McNabb never did us wrong like that.

For years I’ve heard, “the national media is stupid. We didn’t boo McNabb at the draft; we booed the pick.”

I’ve never understood that. Well, we have a chance to change that image. We have a chance to show Donovan we appreciated what he did for us. I have no doubt the majority of fans in the stadium will do the right thing.

To Cataldi and his Nerdy 30, carry out your little performance. But, don’t for a second call yourself a Philadelphia fan. Don’t wear Eagles garb. Wear WIP Radio hats because that’s the “team” you’re really saluting. Sellouts!

When Leonard Weaver was helped off of the turf following a sick knee injury at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, the rousing standing ovation he received from the 65,000 fans wasn’t surprising. Sure, Weaver’s a fullback, but in Philadelphia a guy like him is revered.

A blue-collar town like the City of Brotherly Love admires the tenacious play of a guy like Weaver. And, we also know what a class act Weaver is. Monday, he gave us even more of a reason to believe in his sincerity when he addressed Eagles fans and their support on Twitter.

“Hey ladies and gentlemen, I first want to say that it’s a true blessing to have so much support coming from the fans and family,” he tweeted. “I ll be back, I’ll be back better than ever. For now let’s cheer on our brothers on green on the field. They need us. Those guys played their hearts out.”

How do you not love Leonard Weaver?

Don’t worry, as you can see, the love affair is a two-way street. The second year Eagle, who will spend the rest of the year on IR, told DailyPhiladelphian.com last week how much he admires the city, its fans and its food.

“I love the city,” said Weaver, who previously played in rainy Seattle. “I love the food. But, more importantly, I love the city in the sense of its culture and variety of people. You have the ability to enjoy yourself outside of your house.”

Eagles fullback leonard Weaver continues to show his love for the city of Philadelphia and its fans.

Among the places Weaver likes to go are jazz places around market street.

“I love going there late night,” said Weaver. “It’s very soothing.”

After watching his knee buckle yesterday, we’re going to send Weaver some jazz CDs to play as he recovers.

When it comes to food, Weaver listed Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches and Chickie’s and Pete’s.

And, of course he had an answer ready for the obligatory cheesesteak question.

“Geno’s and Pat’s are both good,” said Weaver. “But, I also really like the lobster cheesesteak at Chickie’s and Pete’s.”

Weaver is a fan of Philly jazz. "It's soothing," he says.

Aside from the city’s culture, Weaver loves the fans.

“Eagles fans are very educated, hardworking and know their stuff,” said Weaver. “They know the truth about you. You need tough love sometimes. It’s good for me and others.”

He likes Philly’s straightforward approach because it reminds him of his own personality.

“Be yourself,” he says is all Philly fans require. “Don’t be one way in front of the camera and another way off camera. Be yourself and don’t be two-faced.”

If there was ever any doubt about how real Weaver was, all you need to do is read his Twitter posts from today when he thanked the fans for their support.

It’s rare to find an athlete as in touch with Philly as Weaver is.

Racking up YAC yards and sprinting 50 yards to paydirt while igniting the passion of 65,000 people on fall Sunday afternoons is what we picture when thinking of DeSean Jackson. But, what’s he do off the field when he’s not playing video games?

Anyone can ask DJacc football questions, but your DailyPhiladelphian couldn’t let an interview go without trying to find out what, specifically, he likes about our city in addition to the passionate fan base.

“I like Center City and the activities there in community,” said Jackson. “I don’t really go out too much. I like to play video games and just chill at home.”

Which cheesesteak does DeSean Jackson prefer? We cornered him on this and other Philly questions.

Of course, in a city known for food, you have to find out his favorite spots. He listed Del Frisco’s and The Capital Grille as those among the top of his list. Then, we had to corner him on the best cheesesteak in town. Unlike Terrell Owens who refused to eat one because it’d ruin his girlish figure, Jackson didn’t shy from the question.

“I love Pat’s,” he said. “They take care of me. American cheese and fries.”

Clearly, Jackson is adapting to the East Coast well, even if we disagree with his cheesesteak selection. Everyone knows Tony Luke’s rocks.

It’s all about the roll, DeSean. In time, we’re confident he’ll learn.

At this point, if we didn’t already know it, Evan Turner will be the Sixers top pick in the NBA Draft next week. If you doubted that at any point in the past, just watch to the video below from the Sixers website in which they interview Turner in the team locker room.

About 35 seconds in, they bring up the question about a uniform number. Thaddeus Young has his number 21. Turner says his backup number is 11, but that’s occupied by last season’s top pick Jrue Holiday. Why would you ask that if you weren’t picking the guy?

Turner also says he likes the city as he went past Independence Mall and “the river down there.” A Sixers videographer identified the river as the Schuylkill River. Turner said, “That’s pretty cool, I could see myself hanging out around there.”

Another clue the Sixers will take this guy comes when he’s asked about his arm for throwing out the opening pitch at a Phillies game. Turner displays some personality when he says, “‘I’m trying to decide between my slider and changeup.”

Word to the wise, if he has any decent pitching skills, keep him away from Citizen’s Bank Park before Ruebn Amaro tries to sign him. Turner may just ink with the Phillies and join a winning organization instead of the Sixers.

I’ve had it. The Chicago columnists, radio hosts, newspapers and a smattering of their fans have presented me with the proverbial final straw. I’m sick of people constantly bringing up how bad and horrible Philly’s sports fans are for the most minute incidents. No other sports fans ever cross the line of good taste. They’ve never poured beer on players during a game. They’ve never thrown snowballs on the field. They’ve never beaten up athletes or coaches on the field.

Nope. Never. Only in Philly.

If you listen to the national media, that’s a fact. Only, it’s far from one. And, now, it’s time to do something to change the perception of our fine city.

The Daily Philadelphian is launching The Moronic Fan Watch. We will keep tabs on fans throughout the United States and their moronic behavior. The goal is to show that Philly fans are not, indeed, the low class morons the national media have made us out to be throughout the years.

To be clear, we’ve had a few jackasses in the City of Brotherly Love. But, we’re far from the only city to house the village idiots.

What really got us motivated and fired up to start tracking fan behavior across the United States was coverage of the recent Stanley Cup Finals. First, Dan McNeil hacked his way through a column in which he described the Flyers fans as low rent because some women were fat and some used profanity. OK, I guess that’s worse than throwing beer on an opposing player during a game.

McNeil is not the first, nor last, to do so. TJ Simers ripped Philly fans during the 2001 NBA Finals. Then, during the 2009 NLCS, he dug up and ran the same column again.

The bottom line is from this point on — June 13, 2010 to be exact — we’ll break down which fans are doing what. Each negative action will be worth a point. Then, we can see who has the moronic fans. Links to stories will be posted.

Since we obviously can’t keep track of everything, we’ll need your help. If you see or read about a moronic fan action in the United States, e-mail us at MoronicFans@gmail.com.

Thanks for your help. Together, we can paint a new image for Philly’s sports fans!

Now that the NJ/NY region has earned the right to host the 2014 Super Bowl, the question about Philly’s chances to hold the biggest sporting event in the nation has to pop into your head. The economic boom a Super Bowl would provide the City of Brotherly Love is unmeasurable.

Not surprisingly, Eagles owner Jeff Lurie addressed that very question in a news release today.

Lincoln Financial Field would be a great venue for a Super Bowl. With NJ/NY earning a bid to host the 2014 game, Philly now has hope.

“The Eagles are enthusiastic supporters of the New York, New Jersey Super Bowl. New York will be a great City to host this championship event. This is an excellent way to rally around the new Meadowlands Stadium and support the incredible effort that is required to achieve such an accomplishment. Some of the most dramatic and memorable games in NFL playoff and championship history were played in cold weather conditions. Eagles fans embrace the outdoor experience and all that it brings to the game.

“Hosting the Super Bowl here in Philadelphia would be a great experience for our fans across the city and region. We certainly have an outstanding combination of assets including an expansive infrastructure built to host large events and conventions. With that said, we realize that warm weather options may always have the advantage when it comes to hosting the Super Bowl. However, if the league supports more northern games, we would pursue.”

Lurie said the right things as he can’t, at this point, come out and say that other cold climate cities are entitled to host the big game. He has to wait, as do Pat Bowlen and Robert Kraft, until after 2014 to make their pitch.

Once Roger Goodell and others see that playing cold weather championship games in a sport associated with biting winter winds adds to the experience, northern cities will be added to the rotation. Possibly every fourth Super Bowl will take place in a colder city.

At that point, Lurie will have a solid case. The Eagles are one of the classiest franchises in the NFL and Philly has a lot to offer. Great restaurants, hotels, a first-class convention center and other amenities.

For once, Philly can root for New York because if that city provides a first-class Super Bowl experience, then Philly fans may finally get the game in their own backyard.
