Finally, the last Andrews stiff has left the NovaCare Complex. It’s about 18 months too late.

With yesterday’s cutdown-deadline deal that shipped Stacy Andrews to Seattle for <del datetime="2010-09-05T16:03:29+00:00">a donation to USC</del> a seventh round pick, the Eagles have finally started to clean up the mess they created a year ago when they attempted to restructure their o-line around a guy with medical issues.

Shawn Andrews, now poised to regain Pro Bowl status with the Giants, has a well-documented questionable past in regards to his back and depression. We won’t question the severity of either here. We’ll assume he really wanted to play, but just couldn’t the last two years. Yet, the Eagles tried to give Andrews a support system here by signing his brother, Stacy, and trading for his college roommate, Jason Peters.

Thankfully, both Shawn and Stacy Andrews are out of town. A bigger set of crybabies this town has yet to see.

We all know what happened — neither Andrews could play last year: Shawn with his back issues, and Stacy was coming off of ACL surgery when the Eagles inked him as a free agent. And, Stacy apparently couldn’t play guard — his footwork sucked for the Eagles blocking scheme.

Jason Peters had an up-and-down year that saw him rack up yellow laundry along the field in manner reminiscent of Antone Davis.

In a word, the Eagles F’d over their offensive line around Shawn Andrews. Thankfully, the Andrews boys have both fled this town and stolen our money in the process.

Shawn at least went quietly into the night. Stacy, on the other hand, had some things to say upon leaving town. He says the fans and media took out their anger over Shawn’s issues on him. He says he never had a fair chance to win us over.

Dude, seriously? Had you started more than just two games for us, or even played a little below average football, maybe you could have been respected. The fact is, you couldn’t win a starting gig this summer, then complained that you were promised that you’d be the starter this season.

You didn’t want to work and earn your starting slot. You wanted it handed to you, just like you and Shawn think you have a right to earn fat paychecks while not playing.

Seriously, thank God that family is outta here! Now, if only we could jettison Peters, the walking 10-yard-offensive holding flag, to another locale. I guess for now, Peters stays as a final reminder to the way Andy Reid. and Co. messed up the offensive line a year ago.

OK, let me get the straight, the Eagles released their most consistent linebacker from a year ago because they didn’t want to pay him $5 million next year.

Three days later, the Eagles decide to pay Stacy Andrews a $4 million roster bonus despite not showing any indication that he has any brains or can actually play offensive guard.

Stacy Andrews displaying the incredible play that earned him a $4 million roster bonus.

A year ago, the Birds signed Andrews to a multi-year deal that paid him a lot of money. Sure, he was coming off of an ACL injury, but the Eagles were convinced he’d be ready.

All Andrews did was lose his starting spot in Week 2 and then not dress for half the year, even when Jamaal Jackson suffered his own knee injury and the team was down a guard.

On one hand, the Eagles tried to say Andrews just wasn’t ready to play physically last year as he hadn’t completely recovered from his surgery.

However, Andrews himself said he had trouble picking up the Eagles blocking scheme. Of course, as we pointed out last month, that really isn’t a surprise as he scored a 15 on the Wonderlic.

What is a surprise is that the Eagles would continue to piss away money on this guy while not giving cash to guys like Witherspoon or even Brian Westbrook, although we do agree with his release.

One can only wonder if this means Shawn Andrews will again be on the Birds roster as well.

A day after reports came down that the Eagles were poised to ask Stacy Andrews to restructure the contract that he did absolutely nothing to earn last year, Inquirer reporter Jeff McLane reached out to the stiff and got his take on the situation.

Andrews told McLane that he would agree to “a minor restructuring” of his deal that paid him in excess of $5 million last year and could amount to $60 million if he is paid the full amount.

Stacy Andrews displaying his gameday attire last season.

The free agent bust came to the team with the starting guard job in his grasp. It was his to lose, and he lost it to Nick Cole. In fairness, Andrews was coming back from an ACL injury last year and we’d be willing to consider giving him a pass for his performance in 2009.

However, by his own admission after being pulled from the starting line-up in week 2, he was having trouble picking up the Eagles blocking scheme. By the end of the year, he wasn’t even dressing for games, having been passed on the depth chart by Max Jean-Gilles, another stiff.

Quite frankly, the Eagles should have seen this coming. In 2004, he was next to last in his draft class among offensive tackles in the all important Wonderlic scores. He posted a 15, while the average score for a tackle is a 26. No wonder this guy couldn’t figure out that his job when the ball was snapped this year was to open up running lanes and protect Donovan McNabb.

While Andrews will tweak his deal, we don’t expect him on the team come April, when he is due a roster bonus in excess of $4 million.

Andrews told McLane he will not mess with the bonus. We tell Andrews to have fun in the UFL next year. Maybe he and Shawn can fulfill their dream of playing together for the Las Vegas Locomotives.
